Switch Between Windows

In Windows 95 and 98, you can have more than one window open at a time. For Example, you can have a Microsoft Word file open, an Excel file, and an Access file open at the same time. You can copy text and graphics from an Excel file and paste it in a MS Word file. Think of each Window as a separate piece of paper ( MS Word is a separate piece of paper, Excel is a separate piece of paper, and Access is a separate piece of paper). Switching between Windows lets you place a different piece of paper at the top of the pile.

Here's how it works:

  1. Open MS Word, the default will open a new blank page.
  2. Now go to the start button, select programs, and then open the program Excel. By default a new blank page will open. Please note that Excel is on your desk top. MS Word did not close it is now behind Excel program.
  3. Look at your Task Bar. You will see a button for MS Word (document 1) and a button for Excel. The Excel button is highlighted.
  4. Click on the MS Word button. The MS Word file is on your desk top. The Excel file did not close. It is behind the MS Word file. The Task Bar now displays the MS Word file highlighted while the Excel file is no longer highlighted.
  5. Go to the Task Bar and click on the Excel button. The Excel file is now on your desk top.
  6. You are now switching between Windows.

You can do this exercise with any number of programs on your computer desk top. It does not have to be with MS Word and MS Excel. You can now easily copy and paste text or graphics between programs.
