What to do For a Total Screen Freeze
This method will work as long
as you have Norton Crash Guard installed on your computer. Move the mouse to the task bar
located at the bottom of the screen RIGHT click the mouse on the
SHIELD ICON (the letter "N" is in the center of the shield) A dialogue box appears titled
Norton Anti-Freeze. There is a clear white box in
the center of the dialogue box. There is also a list of file names or programs
listed in this box. Use the LEFT mouse button to click the file name or program
that appears frozen. That file or program is now highlighted in a dark color. If
you don't select a file the "Norton Anti-Freeze" will not work. Left Click the Unfreeze Button.
A new Dialogue box Appears. A message of instructions appears in this box that
may explain "How to solve the problem." Click the "OK"
button. Norton Anti-Freeze will attempt to unfreeze the file or program you
selected. If the program does become
Unfrozen, you need to do the following:
Left click the SAVE button on
the MENU ICON bar to save the file provided you have previously named that file
-- otherwise go to step "B.” Left click file on the MENU
Bar. Left click "Save As."
The "Save As" dialogue box appears. Near the bottom of the dialogue
box, is a white colored box titled "File Name." It should be
hi-lighted with a temporary Name. Begin typing a NEW name for this file. The new
name types over the temporary name. Left Click the "Save"
Button. The "Save As"
dialogue box disappears and the file is saved. Close down the current working
program. (For Example: This could be "Microsoft Word," or
"Microsoft Access." ) The Microsoft "Desk
Top" should appear on your screen. What will this method do?
By closing down the file and
program, the Windows 98 Operating System will correct or unscramble fouled up
computer programming code. You can now re-open the current
program and file, and it should function as normal. Question
What if the screen freezes
while I'm on the Internet? You can experience screen
freezes due to a telephone line disconnection created by your Internet Service
Provider. This occurs when there are too many "callers" on the
Internet Service Provider's computer server at the same time. It's sometime
referred to as getting kicked off! This can also be caused by a Web Site you are
currently visiting. Their computer server may malfunction due to too many
visitors, they are shutting down the system for service, or their server crashes. How do I solve this Problem?
Use the Norton Anti-Freeze, as
mentioned above. Your goal is to get back to the Windows desktop. If the mouse
still functions, attempt to close all Internet files and your Internet Provider
Program. If this method does not work, your last resort is to re-boot the
computer (push the OFF button to turn off the computer wait 5 seconds and push
the ON button). Your computer will now restart. During the re-boot process
Widows 95/98 will automatically start Scan Disk (Scan Disk will automatically
run any time the computer is improperly shut down). Scan Disk will attempt to
correct computer code problems. A Dialogue box may appear informing you that
"Lost Chains" have been discovered. Scan Disk will ask you if you want
to save these "Lost Chains." Select "No." Then select
"Delete" to delete the "Lost Chains." Lost Chains are
usually file fragments that the computer had no place to store due to the
improper shut down. Lost file fragments are usually not readable so there is no
reason to read them. The reboot process will continue and the Windows desk top
will open. Now you can reopen the program
and file you were working in prior to the to the screen freeze. Hint
Starting a new file: before
beginning any typing, give the new file a Name. To do this: Right click on File on the Menu
Bar. From the drop down menu, right
click "Save As." The Save As dialogue box appears. In the File Name box type the
name of your new file. Right click the Save button. Your new file has been saved. If a screen freeze or computer crash would occur, your file and work will
not be lost. Using a current file: As you
type or conduct work within a current file, click on the Save Icon often. This
will keep your new information in the file up to date.
All work Saved will not be lost should a screen freeze or computer crash
occur. Important: As you add text,
pictures, graphics or information to a file it does not become part of the file
until you save it. Any text, pictures, graphics, or information that is not
saved and a screen freeze or computer crash occurs, consider that information
lost! That information becomes lost file fragments or Lost Chains during reboot
and the run of Scan Disk. |
