Does the Norton Anti-Virus Program Have Bugs?

I have had some enquiries concerning the Norton Anti-Virus program that usually comes bundled with Norton System Works 2000.This Norton anti-virus program can also be purchased in a stand alone package. Never the less it's still the same version. This is the question that came in:

I'm very puzzled by a condition that has occurred in my central processing unit since the installation the installation of the Norton Anti-Virus program. The computer will start itself up at any given moment with no one around, and continue to run until I shut it down. Is this problem fixable? I have an e-machine with Windows98.

I have heard this complaint several times, and I have a hard time believing this problem can happen, I guess, because it never happened to me.

Since this problem did not start until you installed the Norton Anti-Virus program, you could assume that the installation did not go correctly. I would recommend uninstalling the program. Be sure to go to the Start button, then selecting Programs on the menu, and then find Norton on the menu. Another menu will pop up. Uninstall will be in this menu. Select it. The program will begin to uninstall. When the uninstall is complete, reboot the computer.

Now reinstall the Norton Anti-Virus program. Be sure to dial into Symantec's web site to reinstall the latest anti-virus updates. This part is important because there are close to 48,000 viruses on the market and new ones are being developed everyday. Those nasty viruses are just dieing to get into your computer. You can use this same procedure for Norton System Works 2000.

Anytime you install a new software program on a computer, there is a danger that it might not install correctly. This is a common problem with software programs. There can be software conflicts with Windows 95/98 operating system and the new software program during the installation.

Here is one good thought about installing new software on your computer: install each new programs separately. Leave your system on and do some normal computer work to see if any problems develop. Let several hour pass. Your computer can act up in all kinds of funny ways. Being patient at this time will prevent a lot of frustration and grief later. A list of them will follow this paragraph. If your computer seems to be working normally, install your next software program. If you install several programs in succession and then you begin to have computer problems, you won't know which program is causing problems. This means you'll have to uninstall all the the programs and then reinstall them. This is very time consuming.

A list of possible problems after a software installation:

  1. Increased frequency of screen freezes.
  2. Computer crashes frequently.
  3. Printer no longer works.
  4. Your computer system slows down.
  5. Software previously installed on your computer begins to act funny.
  6. Your modem no longer works.
  7. Your sound no longer works.
