Add a Shortcut to the Desktop

You can add a Shortcut to the Desktop to provide a quick way of opening a file or program you use regularly. There are several options to complete this task. This is one option.

  1. While you are at the Desktop, double-click on the "My Computer" Icon. The My Computer dialog box appears. Double-click on the C: Drive Icon.
  2. The C: Drive dialog box appears. Double-click on the "My Documents" folder to open "My Documents" folder.
  3. The "My Documents" dialog box appears, displaying all the files in "MY Documents." Click on a file you would like to make a shortcut too.
  4. Click on File, located on the Menu Bar. A drop down menu bar appears.
  5. Click on "Create a Shortcut." The shortcut appears at the bottom of the "My Documents" folder.
  6. Click on the new Shortcut Icon (the name of the new folder) to highlight it and hold down the right mouse button. Continue to hold down the right mouse button and drag the shortcut to an empty space on the desktop. The shortcut is now placed on the desktop.
  7. Double-click the shortcut and it will open from it's own program.

Please note: You can place the shortcut any where on the desktop. Here's how:

Place the mouse on the "Shortcut Icon." Right click the  mouse button and hold it down. Now drag the "Shortcut Icon" to the spot you would like to place the shortcut an release the mouse button. You have now placed the shortcut where you want it.

You can easily recognize a Shortcut on your Desktop. A Shortcut looks like the original file, but it displays an arrow on its Icon.

When you add a shortcut to the Desktop the original file does not move. It remains in the same location on your hard disk.
